ScootPad Returns to Detroit After-School Program

As an after-school educational program director, Mike Mroz knows the importance of engaging students and families in the learning process. His work with the non-profit St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher (SVSF) Center is inherently community-centered. Operating in Detroit for 180 years, the organization was first a kindergarten for orphaned children and has evolved into a multi-service educational program for children and adults, spread across four campuses.

Mike creates engaging and impactful learning experiences for children, presenting opportunities to practice math and reading skills and master the concepts students are learning in school. He involves students in an adaptive learning process that continually assesses students’ understanding and assigns learning paths to meet each student’s individual needs.

Central to the success of Mike’s program is the ScootPad adaptive learning platform which offers targeted practice, rewards students for mastering concepts, and enables students to visualize their progress. With ScootPad Mike can also show parents how their students are improving over time.

“ScootPad automates the intervention process which saves time and is easier than having to continually design instructional interventions. We can manage multiple learning paths simultaneously and meet each student where they are, so students are staying focused on the concepts they need most,” says Mike.

Mike tried out alternate learning solutions in 2022-2023 when ScootPad was temporarily unavailable, as the product was transitioning from ACT® to its new owner, Learning Explorer. This school year Mike has been delighted to bring back ScootPad to his afterschool program and see students busy using ScootPad on their iPads and laptops.

“With ScootPad we use concepts as a measure of success,” he says, “and can show the SVSF board the increase in concepts our students have mastered. And for parents, we can demonstrate how far their students have come academically, which deepens students’ interest and engagement further.”
