Sabrina Reynolds describes her private Utah school as a “reboot of the one-room schoolhouse.” Mastery Learning Academy, based in Taylorsville, about 10 miles south of Salt Lake City, grew out of Reynolds’ desire to offer classical, college preparatory education at a fraction of the cost of most private schools, enabling more children to reach their fullest potential.
Reynolds, who has used the ScootPad adaptive learning platform for three years, says “ScootPad offers me flexibility and transparency and allows me to individualize each student’s learning path,” which is key to the school’s mastery learning approach. Reynolds has tried other adaptive learning products but was unable to gain critical insight into students’ thinking due to a lack of transparency in those products.
Reynolds relies on ScootPad’s reports to do a “deep dive” into students’ learning. As students work toward mastering concepts, Reynolds monitors their progress closely. Says Reynolds, “the proficiency report and weekly goal reports are extremely beneficial. I can easily see which concepts students are struggling with and then deep-dive into them with a question-by-question view. Having the ability to see data in such detail allows me to understand each student’s thinking process and offer support for a specific issue rather than reteaching an entire unit.”
Students can also track their personal learning goals. “Most of my students are behind in reading and math at varying levels. Three of my students entered our school unable to read in the second grade. ScootPad allows them to visualize what they are getting wrong and also see how much they are accomplishing. Seeing their completion go from 10% to 30% is extremely motivating for them. I have had several students complete two years of math in a single school year because of their ability to see their progress in real-time.”
