Enhancing the student experience is of paramount importance to us at ScootPad since it is so critical to student success and in helping them achieve mastery. We want each and every student to be engaged, enriched, and encouraged, so we asked teachers and admins from across ScootPad to share some of their best demonstrated practices. Read below and see how others are setting the stage for an awesome student experience.

1. The Device

What students use to sign in is super critical! As students open their iPads, MacBooks, Chromebooks, or laptops, check if these devices have all the necessary components to run ScootPad effectively by clicking the Check Device Compatibility link from one of those devices.  If anything has a red x next to it, please forward to your IT contact to address. “Our students use iPads and Chromebooks to access ScootPad. Each device has undergone rigorous tests to ensure they meet all district requirements in addition to being able to access ScootPad on our network. 2. The Account

“Our students sign in to ScootPad using Google Classroom integration. It is by far one of the easiest ways to handle rosters and avoid duplicate accounts.” -District admin, California

ScootPad will archive student records which have not been accessed within 365 days. Therefore, a student who used ScootPad in May of 2018 can sign in with the same credentials in October of 2018. We suggest that you do NOT create a new account unless completely removing the old account.

Few Best Practice Recommendations:

  1. Teachers, before adding a new student, check with the admin on record to ensure the student hasn’t been added already. In the below screenshot, the student has 2 sets of credentials. One is in 3 classrooms and the other is in 2 classrooms. Oy vey!
  2. If you would like students to be able to launch ScootPad seamlessly via an LTI connection (Single Sign On), the admin should be aware so that all previous student records can be removed.  Click here for information on this type of connection.

3. The Classroom

All of our teachers have been shown how to unenroll the classrooms at the end of the school year. In addition, we ensure the classroom names on ScootPad for the beginning of the year match what’s on teachers’ doors in school. Continuity is important for our students.” -School admin, New Jersey

Students can be enrolled into a classroom by the admin, by the teacher, or the student can self-enroll when given the class code. When the teacher is no longer using the class, ScootPad does not automatically remove the student unless the account hasn’t been launched for 365 days.

Few Best Practice Recommendations:

  1. At the end of the school year, we strongly encourage teachers to unenroll the students if they will not be using the class over the Summer. In the screenshot below, the student has access to an active class from last year.
  2. If a student is in multiple classrooms, make the classroom names unique and simple for the students to understand.

4. The Content

“We’ve introduced ScootPad to our English teachers with the goal of bringing our Math teachers on board very soon. Therefore, it was very important for us that we were able to hide Math in the classrooms.” – School Admin, Minnesota

When a classroom is created or synced, the teacher has to set up the curriculum/content which governs what students will see.

Few Best Practice Recommendations:

  1. To prevent the student from completing work in content areas that you do not teach (or want disabled) ensure that the enable or disable accordingly In the below screenshot, the class is ELA, but the teacher has Adaptive Practice in Math, Fact Fluency, and Spelling still enabled.
  2. Assign tasks in a similar fashion as they are assigned in your school to avoid the students having a very busy and cluttered dashboard.
  3. Get creative! Rename lessons versus leaving them as the default. In the below screenshot, the student can see the lesson assignment with the name of the standard associated with it.

5. Students get to own their progress

Students can be set up for success easily in ScootPad. With a few tweaks, they will be working independently allowing the teacher to teach smarter! Check out this quick video on how to help students own their progress.
