Get Started with Adaptive Practice in Diagnostic Mode!

The school year is a couple weeks in and more than likely, when your classroom was created, your students started practicing in Diagnostic Mode. What exactly is Diagnostic Mode and how will it help you REINFORCE what you teach?  In this blog post, we’ll answer that for you and more to guarantee you are set up correctly for the new year!

1. Is Diagnostic Mode an assessment?

Yes. In Diagnostic Mode, your students are assessed within their Learning Path. Remember, a Learning Path is simply the concepts you want your students to master or focus on. Your students can be in a pre-built path or one that you have customized. Once Diagnostic Mode has ended, the student is launched seamlessly into Practice Mode. Reassure your students that each question answered still earns a coin, counts towards the weekly goal, and moves them along their Learning Path!

2. Does Diagnostic have a fixed # of questions or amount of time?

No. The length of the test will vary for each student based on how many concepts the student already knows within the Learning Path. Diagnostic Mode adapts to the student as the assessment is performed in order of dependency of the concepts. The longer the student is in Diagnostic Mode the further along in their Learning Path they have gone. Review Students A and B below. Diagnostic Mode was launched within the same Learning Path. However, Student A took 5 minutes and passed 9 concepts. On the other hand Student B took 42 minutes and passed 74 concepts.

3. Will ScootPad assess all concepts in the Learning Path?

ScootPad will assess concepts based on their dependency on other concepts from the learning path. In the image below, the student passed each of the independent concepts (ones not dependent on other concepts). These can be visualized on the bottom of the pyramid. However, focusing on the concepts in the highlighted area, one can see that even though the student passed one concept, the student still needed practice in the other concept. From the student and teacher’s perspective, Diagnostic Mode would need to end and this student will begin Practice Mode due the dependency of the “practice needed concept” on the “not attempted concept”. Another student may go further and yet another student may need to start Practice Mode sooner.


4. Can I control the Diagnostic?

Yes. On the Adaptive Practice dashboard, you can manually cancel Diagnostic Mode and students will immediately begin Practice Mode. To prevent Diagnostic Mode from auto-assigning upon changing a student’s Learning Path, ensure that the setting is correct for the specific content area..


5. What does a student see in Practice Mode?

ScootPad seamlessly spirals concepts each time students launch an adaptive practice. This content represents a variety of item types across DOK levels. If students struggle, ScootPad will enable automatic intervention and scaffold to fill skill gaps. This is an instant teacher time-saver! When students do not respond to ScootPad’s automatic intervention, the concepts are flagged as requiring reteaching and will show up on the RTI-Aligned Intervention Monitor for the teacher to take action. Students also have access to lessons during practice (i.e. on-demand and time-out lessons) or when specifically assigned by their teachers.

6. What happens to the concepts passed in Diagnostic Mode?

The concepts passed in Diagnostic Mode plus the concepts that meet the rigor and proficiency criteria (marked as practice done) are colored turquoise in the Learning Path and will be revisited with strategically spaced quick assessments, called Mastery Checks. Concepts successfully passed during the Mastery Check are marked “Mastered” in the Learning Path. Learn more about “Automatic Mastery Checks” by clicking here!
