New from ScootPad: Mastery Score Explained

Pumpkin Spice isn’t the only cool thing making a Fall entrance! We are welcoming you back to school with a new way to review Mastery! This new improvement represents #8 of the 10 improvements we announced for the new 2018-2019 school year.

Unpacking the Mastery Score

Our Mastery Score is calculated based on the decaying average method a.k.a. “moving average” formula. Traditional averaging would punish the student for not understanding it at the beginning. Decaying average weights the most recent score at 65% and therefore gives a final score that better shows the student’s current understanding. You can see the difference in the example below:

 Questions #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 Final Score
Traditional Average 50%
Decaying Average 65% 95%

You can now review how the Mastery Score is calculated for a concept based on the decaying average method – from various places:

1. Student Mastery Report

2. Adaptive Learning Report

3. Adaptive Learning Grid

4. Details within the Learning Path

Last but not least, the Learning Path is a great place to review your students’ Mastery Score! Don’t forget, you can get other insights too on concepts requiring scaffolding, intervention, concepts in progress and those ready for the Mastery Check.
