I am so pleased with the new Scratchpad on ScootPad! It’s not perfect (at least, working with a mouse on any scratchpad is not perfect!), but the new overlay gives both students and teachers a terrific learning tool!

Take the challenging area problems in the 3rd grade learning path for example. Trying to copy over the shapes and add the necessary information was always cumbersome and made learning how to solve the problems even more difficult for my students. More than simply electronic paper, the new scratchpad is a versatile tool overlaying atop the problem itself. Thus, using the scratchpad actually allows me to easily show students the various steps and allows them to learn the skill much faster.

Take Susiana’s work, below. With the overlay ability, I can draw brackets, extra lines, color coded fill ins, etc. Doing so allows me to demonstrate step-by-step how to break apart and solve these challenging problems. Within only a few minutes, the small group I was working with on these problems began to independently solve them. Last year, when I did the same lesson, it took 2-3 sessions to bring about the same level of learning!

Using the overlay feature and color coding, I can more easily facilitate student understanding and learning!

For Jaimina, who often loses count when looking at grids or patterns on the computer, the overlay is the perfect solution! She simply counts as she goes, without having to keep track, redraw, or try another means which adds time, complication, and the possibility of increased careless mistakes.

The overlay feature lets students keep track of information more easily.

How are you using the new Scratchpad?
