Full disclosure: I have been known to avoid competition. My husband and son are extremely competitive and sometimes…well let’s just say it’s not so much fun to be around them. I am amazed at how my son can turn anything into a competition: tying his shoes, helping bring in groceries from the car…you name it, he can and will turn it into a competition. There was a time I worked and worked to try and change him, until one day I realized… if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. It was that day that I realized the power in making children’s competitive nature work to their (and our) advantage at home, and at school.
Here are some useful tips on how to use ScootPad’s class leaderboard to motivate:
Focus on the goal: the more correct answers, the higher they will climb.
Emphasize what they can control: They may not be able to spend as much time at home on ScootPad as others, but they can work their best when they are able to be on and get the most out of their practice time.
Set up a means to be successful: If a student has a goal, support them. Let them come in at recess or make ScootPad an available center for when they finish early. What about inviting them in at lunch to do an extra practice?
Keep away from negative comparisons or public humiliations. No one is motivated when they feel awful about themselves.
Notice progress: no matter where students are on the leaderboard, they can achieve success if they are motivated and apply themselves. Moving up even one spot, or improving their practices scores and having you comment is often reward enough.
- Support struggles: If you see some students are not successful in their practices because of a consistent stumbling block, this is the perfect time to do a mini lesson and help them over a hurdle.
